Quick Answer

A coffee shop fit-out in Riyadh starts with the bar and back-of-house layout, then the MEP: water, drainage, extraction and enough power for espresso machines and refrigeration. Municipal and Civil Defense approvals, the seating mix and the finishes that create your brand experience come next. The equipment and MEP usually drive the cost more than the decor.

Riyadh's café scene is one of the most competitive F&B markets in the region. A strong concept still needs a fit-out that lets baristas work fast, keeps the equipment running and gets through inspections first time. This is how we approach coffee shop fit-outs.

1. Design the bar around the workflow

Map the order flow from order point to espresso machine to hand-off, and keep the barista's steps short. Position grinders, the espresso machine, refrigeration, the dishwasher and the hand-wash sink in that sequence. A bar that looks good but makes the team cross paths at peak hours costs you sales every day.

2. Get the MEP right early

  • Water and drainage: filtered supply to the machine, floor drains and grease traps where required
  • Power: dedicated circuits for espresso machines, grinders, ovens and refrigeration
  • Ventilation: extraction for any hot food prep, plus HVAC sized for a full room in summer
  • Lighting: bright task lighting at the bar, warmer ambient light in seating areas

3. Approvals

Cafés in Riyadh typically need municipal (Balady) licensing and Civil Defense approval, and food-handling areas must meet hygiene requirements. Build these into the design stage; our guide to fit-out permits in Riyadh explains the process.

4. Seating that matches your model

A grab-and-go kiosk, a laptop-friendly café and a specialty coffee lounge need very different seating. Decide your target dwell time and design for it: high tables and counters for quick visits; sofas, power outlets and good Wi-Fi for longer stays; family or private sections where your customers expect them.

5. Finishes that survive daily use

Choose durable surfaces for the bar top and flooring, washable wall finishes behind the counter and joinery built for heavy use. A signature feature, such as a statement bar front, lighting or ceiling, does more for brand recall than expensive finishes everywhere.

What drives the cost?

Size, the amount of custom joinery, the equipment package and how much MEP work the unit needs. A unit that previously housed a café is usually cheaper to fit out than a shell retail unit that needs drainage, extraction and power upgrades from scratch.

Timeline

Once the design is approved, most café fit-outs take several weeks on site, with approvals and equipment lead times often setting the overall schedule. See our wider restaurant and hospitality fit-out guide for larger F&B projects.

FAQ

Typically municipal (Balady) licensing and Civil Defense approval, with food-handling areas meeting hygiene requirements. Your contractor should plan these from the design stage.

Equipment, MEP upgrades (water, drainage, power, extraction) and custom joinery usually drive cost more than decorative finishes.

Usually yes, because drainage, power and extraction may already be in place, although they still need to be checked and adapted.
